What is a Democrat?

Politics in the United States depend on voters electing candidates to serve in office. As a practical matter, political parties have evolved to help elect candidates who share philosophies. Our two main parties are the Democratic and Republicans parties, followed by a long list of less-influential parties (including Green, Libertarian, Constitution and Socialist).

The Wikipedia article for the Democratic Party (United States) says:
"The Democratic Party is one of the two major contemporary political parties in the United States along with the Republican Party. Since the 1930s, the party has promoted a socially liberal and progressive platform, and its Congressional caucus is composed of progressives, liberals, and centrists. The party has the lengthiest record of continuous operation in the United States and is among the oldest political parties in the world."

Democrats believe ourselves to be the party of the people. We are the party of the middle class and the poor. We believe in ensuring an equitable sharing of wealth and political power in this country. We believe workers must be able to earn family-supporting wages. We believe that a primary job of government is to ensure that everyone can lead dignified, healthy, and fulfilling lives.
